MFA Student Arpita Roy earns Bread Loaf fellowship

Rising third-year MFA poetry student Arpita Roy has been selected as the winner of the Bread Loaf Katharine Bakeless Nason Contributor Award in Poetry for the 2023 Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference. For this highly competitive award, she was chosen out of a pool of 2,500 applicants.

The Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference is an annual conference held in the Green Mountains of Ripton, Vermont, taking place from August 16 to August 26 this year. Over the ten days, students will participate in workshops and craft classes and meet with agents, editors, and publishers. The total stipend awarded is a total of $3,985, which includes lodging and meals.

“I’m looking forward to being in a community of poets and writers, most of whom I have never met before!” Roy says about the upcoming conference. “Being in an MFA and being a part of the workshops here has made me realize how much there is to learn not only from the faculty but also from the works of my fellow writers.”

Roy got her B.A. and M.A. in English from Jadavpur University in India. Among other achievements, she has been awarded the Cheuse Center International Travel Grant for Summer 2023, which she used to travel to Europe to explore the relationship between solitude and community in English Romantic and Modernist poetry.
