Considered the American ‘national pastime,’ no sport has a richer history than baseball. Yet as a new season draws to a close, the game finds itself at a crossroads, facing a number of serious challenges. Award-winning authors E. Ethelbert Miller, Cesar Brioso and Tim Wendel explore everything from the Negro Leagues to beisbol in the Caribbean to the U.S. major leagues. They’ll discuss the game’s vibrant past and what may lie ahead.
César Brioso is a digital producer and former baseball editor for USA Today Sports. In more than 30 years as a sports journalist, he has also worked for the Miami Herald and the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. He is the author of Havana Hardball: Spring Training, Jackie Robinson and the Cuban League and Last Seasons in Havana: The Castro Revolution and the End of Professional Baseball in Cuba, a winner of the 2020 SABR Baseball Research Award.
E. Ethelbert Miller is a literary activist and author of two memoirs and several poetry collections. He hosts the WPFW morning radio show On the Margin with E. Ethelbert Miller and hosts and produces The Scholars on UDC-TV which received a 2020 Telly Award. Most recently, he was given a grant from the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities and a congressional award from Congressman Jamie Raskin in recognition of his literary activism. Miller’s latest book is When Your Wife Has Tommy John Surgery and Other Baseball Stories.
A writer-in-residence at Johns Hopkins University, Tim Wendel is the author of 15 books – novels and narrative nonfiction. His award-winning titles include Summer of ’68, High Heat and Escape from Castro’s Cuba. Ken Burns says, “For as long as I have followed his work, Tim Wendel has chosen a distinct path of intimate stories within big topics, those subjects revealed by his superb way of getting at the particular.” Wendel’s stories and columns have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, National Geographic, Psychology Today and Esquire. In addition, he has narrated seven audiobooks.
