In LaNitra Berger’s sweeping book, Irma Stern and the Racial Paradox of South African Modern Art: Audacities of Color, she examines how a white artist became South Africa’s most prolific painter of Black, Jewish, and Colored life while maintaining controversial positions on race. Art Historian Peter Chametzky says, “Berger’s subtle and very timely study brilliantly mines Stern’s story and her works’ imagery to extract from them essential insights into global modernism, art under apartheid, and Stern’s conflicted legacy.”
