The Price of Exclusion with Author Nicole Carr
Monday, June 22, 2026 9:40 AM to 11:15 AM EDT
Online Location, Zoom
Why are Black doctors and their patients undervalued? What factors in America’s health system have paved the way for this to happen? Award-winning journalist Nicole Carr investigates the long history of medical racism in her first book, The Price of Exclusion: The Pursuit of Healthcare in a Segregated Nation. Beginning with her great-grandfather, a Jamaican-born physician, Carr uses vivid storytelling and meticulous research to examine the systematic disempowerment of Black doctors through the use of segregation and impassable roadblocks, thus erasing contributions of Black doctors to the medical field and costing lives. Carr will be in conversation with LaNitra Berger, author and Director of George Mason's Department of African and African American Studies.
This is a virtual event, presented in partnership with OLLI Mason. This event is part of Fall for the Book's year-round programming. To view our full schedule and find out more about the festival, visit: https://fallforthebook.org/
